THE INTELLIGENT WAY TO MORE DRIVING PLEASURE.
BMW ConnectedDrive Driver Assistance systems in the BMW 3 Series Touring.
The more you can focus on driving, the greater the pleasure you enjoy. Which is why the BMW 3 Series Touring relieves you of a lot of tasks. The Driving Assistant warns of any upcoming dangers. The Navigation system Professional ensures that you’ll have no unpleasant surprises, even in unfamiliar surroundings. And with the on-board helpers at hand, parking is more comfortable than ever before.
DRIVING ASSISTANT.
The Driving Assistant package combines the camera-based systems Lane Departure Warning and approach control and person warning with light city braking function.
The Lane Departure Warning detects lane markings and alerts the driver to an unintentional lane change at speeds above approx. 70 km/h by means of vibrations in the steering wheel. The warning is not activated if the lane change is deliberate, that is, when the indicator has been activated.
Whereas the Approach control warning with light city braking function detects vehicles, the Person warning with light city braking function reacts to pedestrians. If a vehicle ahead brakes suddenly, the BMW 3 Series responds immediately when the Approach control warning is activated. The system operates in steps. A warning symbol is first displayed, then the symbol begins flashing and an acoustic warning is emitted, and finally the brakes are lightly applied (when travelling at speeds under 60 km/h). The person warning operates at speeds between 10 and 60 km/h and emits a single-level warning in the event of acute danger. If the system warns of a potential collision, the brakes are simultaneously preconditioned for a faster response. In the event of an emergency, the system applies the brakes. This function can be limited by darkness and fog.
ACTIVE CRUISE CONTROL WITH STOP&GO FUNCTION.
Active cruise control with Stop&Go function, incl. radar-based Approach control warning with full deceleration function and braking offers the option of greater comfort and safety in traffic jams. The system maintains a speed preselected by the driver, as well as the distance to the driver ahead. The vehicle takes over accelerating and braking and keeps the predetermined distance to the car ahead even in slow-moving traffic and down to a stand-still in traffic jams. If the car approaches the vehicle ahead of it, or if another vehicle enters the lane, the system precisely adjusts the speed to take the other vehicle into account. It can be activated at speeds of up to 210 km/h.
The Stop&Go function not only automatically regulates speed down to standstill, it also automatically accelerates back up to the desired speed within a limited time frame as soon as traffic flow allows.
If a vehicle ahead brakes suddenly, the BMW responds immediately when the Approach control warning is activated. The system operates in phases. A warning symbol is first displayed, then the symbol begins to flash and an acoustic warning is sounded, and finally the brakes are applied sharply.
BMW HEAD-UP DISPLAY.
The full-colour BMW Head-Up Display projects all information relevant to the journey directly into the driver's field of vision, allowing them to fully concentrate on driving. The display includes data such as the current speed and – depending on the equipment – navigation tips, Speed Limit Info incl. no-overtaking indicator, telephone and entertainment lists, along with information and warnings from the various driver assistance systems.
The icons projected onto the windscreen are displayed in a particularly high resolution and in full colour. The image's projection appears as if it were approx. 2.3 m in front of the vehicle. This, in combination with optimal positioning, allows the information to be read quickly, conveniently and with minimal distraction.
The brightness of the projection automatically adjusts to suit the external light conditions, with different displays for day and night, and the height of the display can also be adjusted. Furthermore, the driver can also select which information to display in addition to the current speed and warnings from the driver assistance systems.
PARKING.
Intelligent systems for easier manoeuvring in and out of parking spaces are available as an option for the BMW 3 Series Touring. Useful assistants such as the Rear view camera, Parking assistant and Surround View increase comfort in all parking situations – and in particular in tight spaces and circumstances in which your view is restricted.
Rear view camera
The Rear view camera allows the driver to view the area behind the car in the Control Display while manoeuvring and parking. The Rear view camera enhances visibility when reversing at speeds below 15 km/h, for example when parking.
The guidelines and coloured obstacle markings that appear in the Control Display show the driver if the selected parking spot is big enough to accommodate the car – which makes parking easier. When the steering wheel is at full lock, the system displays red turning circle lines and green guide lines that adapt to the steering wheel movements.
The Rear view camera is automatically deactivated after ten metres or when the speed exceeds 15 km/h. In conjunction with the trailer tow hitch, the Rear view camera makes the approach when hooking up a trailer easier thanks to a practical zoom function.Parking assistant
The Parking assistant makes parking parallel and perpendicular to the road easier. Whether activated or not, the system measures potential spaces – even tight parallel parking spaces – while driving past at a low speed (below 35 km/h) and at a maximum distance of 1.5 m from the row of parked cars.
When a large enough gap has been found, the driver simply turns on the indicator and the Parking assistant takes over the steering, while the driver continues to operate the accelerator, gears and brakes. The system also shows supplementary instructions in the Control Display and additional acoustic signals.
As the car slowly approaches an obstacle, the Parking assistant is automatically activated via the function "Auto PDC" (Automatic Park Distance Control). The system's enhanced functionality includes supporting the driver when parking in spaces that are perpendicular to the road. The PDC also emits a warning signal if the car becomes too close to obstacles on either side. So the driver can stay relaxed and enjoy greater safety while parking.Surround View
Surround View includes the camera-based functions Top View, Side View and Rear view camera. Cameras in the exterior mirrors and a rear view camera provide a 270° view around the vehicle.
Top View displays the areas on the side of the car for more convenient manoeuvring. Side View makes navigating areas with low visibility, such as exits or confusing intersections, safer. Two digital cameras on the left and right of the front of the car capture the traffic situation in front of the vehicle. This enables early detection of oncoming traffic so that the driver can react appropriately. The Side View function is automatically deactivated when the car reaches 15 km/h. The driver can then choose to activate the Rear view camera, Top View or Side View.
The camera systems are activated when the car is put into reverse or the PDC button or Side View button is pressed. The images captured by the cameras are shown on the Control Display.
NAVIGATION SYSTEM PROFESSIONAL.
The Navigation system Professional features a sleek design and a superior range of services: It delivers a simple and easy-to-use navigation system that is seamlessly integrated into the BMW, including the iDrive operating concept and iDrive Touch Controller. The system comprises the hands-free facility with USB interface and voice control, the radio BMW Professional with DVD drive, as well as a 20 GB memory for audio files. It also facilitates the use of Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI). The built-in 8.8" LCD colour display with a resolution of 1,280 x 480 pixels and split screen function (main and supplementary screen) is designed for optimal readability and clarity.
iDrive Touch Controller
The iDrive Touch Controller with direct menu control buttons, eight functional bookmarks and voice control makes operation intuitive by allowing you to enter the address of your destination in handwriting on its touch-sensitive surface. Thanks to the three-dimensional map display that makes use of satellite images as a map background – with photo-realistic depictions of selected sights – navigation becomes an exciting visual experience.
Automatic map updates
Map updates are available at BMW dealerships for three years without license fees. Within the framework of BMW ConnectedDrive, in selected European countries the system automatically updates the maps for three years up to four times per year.
LANE CHANGE WARNING.
At speeds of 20 km/h or more, the radar-based Lane Change Warning detects approaching vehicles in the blind spot as well as vehicles in the neighbouring lane. The driver is alerted to the presence of vehicles in the critical zone by a triangular warning symbol on the exterior mirrors. If, in spite of this, the driver indicates the intention to change lanes by activating the indicator, they are alerted to the danger of the situation by a vibration in the steering wheel and a flashing triangular warning symbol on the exterior mirrors.
SPEED LIMIT INFO INCLUDING NO-OVERTAKING INDICATOR.
Safety first: Speed Limit Info including no-overtaking indicator shows the current speed limit in the instrument cluster, as well as information regarding no-overtaking zones. This is shown on the Info Display in the instrument cluster. A camera integrated into the rear-view mirror detects relevant traffic signs. A control unit then processes and displays this information together with data from the navigation system. By utilising other features in the car, even variable speed limits – such as those that apply during wet conditions or at certain times of day – can sometimes also be shown.
BMW SELECTIVE BEAM.
BMW Selective Beam makes driving at night more comfortable and safer. It provides excellent visibility in the dark without dazzling other drivers. The system detects other road users and selectively excludes them from the high-beam headlight distribution. A beam range of 400 m ensures early detection of risks and improved directional tracking.
