BMW 520d.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder diesel engine of the BMW 520d produces an exceptional 140 kW (190 hp) performance from its 2.0 litre capacity. Its combination of CommonRail direct injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry yields a top speed of 229 km/h (Steptronic transmission: 226 km/h, xDrive Steptronic transmission: 220 km/h) and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds (Steptronic transmission: 8.0 s, xDrive Steptronic transmission: 8.2 s), with a torque of 400 Nm at 1,750 to 2,500 rpm. The efficient average fuel consumption: 5.0 to 4.6 l/100 km (Steptronic transmission: 4.9 to 4.5 l, xDrive Steptronic transmission: 5.2 to 4.8 l) at a CO2 emissions level of 132 to 122 g/km (Steptronic transmission: 128 to 118 g/km, xDrive Steptronic transmission: 137 to 127 g/km).

ECO PRO MODE.

As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO Mode, everything is geared towards greater efficiency and depending on your individual driving style, this results in a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20 per cent (according to an internal BMW fuel consumption study).
The additional functions of coasting (with Steptronic transmission only), preview assistant and ECO PRO Route (both with Navigation system Professional only) enable another five per cent of savings potential. This mode optimises accelerator and transmission response as well as shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning strategy. The Control Display shows you which EfficientDynamics technologies are currently lowering your fuel consumption. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation to help you boost efficiency even further.

EU6 EMISSION NORM.

BMW engines have always been ahead of their time because they have been the core competency of BMW since 1917. The engines of the BMW 5 Series Touring provide particularly impressive proof of this. With outstanding performance, spontaneous response and commendably smooth running, it meets the highest standards of cultivated driving comfort.
BluePerformance technology, standard on all diesel models, is forward looking and allows the diesel engine’s emission behaviour to be further optimised. In addition to the diesel particle filter and oxidation catalyst, a nitrogen oxide converter reduces the NO2 contained in the emissions even further. Some models break down nitrogen oxide in a different way: the SCR converter (SCR = selective catalytic reduction) with AdBlue injection. A chemical reaction set in motion by an injection of the urea solution AdBlue reduces NO2 significantly. In the long run, this results in one of the cleanest diesel vehicles in the world with consistently reduced emissions. This fulfils the stringent EU6 emission norm as standard.

AERODYNAMICS.

The entire vehicle design is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimised, aerodynamic front apron and undercarriage feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.
The entire front section embodies the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy, including the newly designed front apron. The optimised design of the cooling air inlets also contributes to improved aerodynamics - thereby reducing air resistance. The same applies to the wheel arches, which are specially designed to reduce air swirl.
The flat undercarriage cover, which also shields the engine compartment, is an additional detail that greatly improves the car’s aerodynamics. This new cover is not only advantageous in terms of aerodynamics: it also improves sound insulation and provides greater protection from rust.

BRAKE ENERGY REGENERATION.

Kinetic energy.

Every time you brake, kinetic energy is generated and until recently this energy went unused. Brake Energy Regeneration takes advantage of this long-overlooked potential. It harnesses the coasting energy that is generated whenever you brake or take your foot off the accelerator and turns it into electricity. This electricity is then used to charge the car battery. The intelligent energy management system means that the alternator no longer needs to run permanently, which reduces the strain on the generator. The result is reduced fuel consumption and increased performance – classic BMW EfficientDynamics.

AUTOMATIC START/STOP FUNCTION.

Save fuel by switching off the engine.

The Automatic Start/Stop function makes sure that fuel is only used when your car is actually driving.
Whilst waiting at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Start/Stop function takes to save fuel by switching off the engine as soon as the car is idling and you have taken your foot off the clutch (manual transmission), or when you brake to a complete standstill (Steptronic transmission).
A signal in the Info Display indicates that the Automatic Stop/Start function is active. As soon as you shift into gear (manual transmission) or take your foot off the brake (Steptronic transmission), the engine switches itself back on in a split second so you can continue driving without delay.
The Automatic Start/Stop function never compromises driving comfort and safety, as it remains inactive if the engine has not reached its ideal running temperature, the interior has not yet been sufficiently heated/cooled, if the battery level is too low or if you are turning the steering wheel. A central control unit restarts the engine if required, even when the car is at a standstill. For example, if the car starts to roll forward or if the windscreen becomes foggy. The Automatic Start/Stop function can be switched off at any time with the push of a button.
